HM Submarine E16 sailed from Harwich on 18th August, 1916 on a North Sea patrol. She was last sighted thirty five miles east of Yarmouth and then not seen again. On 22nd August she hit a mine while in the Heligoland Bight and sank. All of her crew of thirty one were killed. Included among these was Arthur Bowler.
